Who are we?
The Palliative Care Council of South Australia Inc is a not-for-profit community organisation formed in 1982 and is a recognised public benevolent institution (PBI) with deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. Our goal is ‘quality palliative care for all South Australians facing death and bereavement’.
We work to improve the choices for care available to people with terminal illnesses – no matter the disease process - through advocacy, policy development and public and professional education using a health promotion model. We played an integral role in the formulation and introduction of standards for providing quality palliative care for all Australians in collaboration with the national peak body, Palliative Care Australia and encourage palliative care and other health and aged care service providers to embrace the National Standards Assessment Program (NSAP); a program by which they can measure how well they achieve the elements of each of the Standards. NSAP is a voluntary program which compliments existing formal accreditation processes.
The constituency of PCCSA members include the general public, future and present consumers, professionals, clinicians and academics with an interest in caring for people who are dying. To be an effective organisation, the Council relies upon public support and individual goodwill to assist the various Council programs.
Our patron is Mrs Liz Scarce, wife of His Excellency, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR, Governor of South Australia.
History
The organisation was originally run by volunteers under the name of “The South Australian Association for Hospice Care Inc.”. Whilst the Association is member based, its reach extends well beyond its supporting constituency to all palliative care patients in South Australia who are dying and those caring for them, ie. carers, family members and friends.

"Quality care for dying South Australians, their carers and communities"
